Customized Stainless Steel Filter Cartridges for Waste Oil Filtration

Customer Background

The customer is a U.S.-based manufacturer specializing in high-performance automotive and engine components.

Its products involve fluid handling and engine-related systems where component reliability, precise machining and consistent performance are critical. For one of its applications, the customer needed a customized filter element for waste engine oil filtration.

Unlike standard water filtration, used engine oil can contain a mixture of metal particles, carbon deposits and other solid debris generated during engine operation. The higher viscosity of oil and the nature of these contaminants also place greater mechanical demands on the filter element.

The customer was therefore not looking for a standard disposable cartridge.

The requirement was for a compact, reusable stainless steel filter element that could be integrated into its existing equipment and provide reliable debris removal under actual operating conditions.

The Challenge: A Non-Standard Filter for Existing Equipment

The project began with a physical sample supplied by the customer.

Because the filter had to fit an existing assembly, dimensional compatibility was one of the most important requirements. Overall diameter, inlet dimensions, filter structure and end configuration all had to match the customer's equipment closely.

At the same time, the cartridge needed sufficient mechanical strength for oil filtration and had to withstand repeated use without the deformation or media damage that can occur with conventional polymer filter elements.

Pullner therefore treated the project as a customized metal filter development rather than selecting an existing catalogue product.

The customer's original filter was reviewed in detail, and a new stainless steel construction was developed according to the sample and application requirements.

Prototype Development and Dimensional Adjustment

A prototype batch was produced for customer evaluation.

During development, particular attention was given to:

  • overall cartridge dimensions
  • inlet and outlet geometry
  • stainless steel filter structure
  • filtration surface construction
  • end-cap configuration
  • mechanical strength
  • compatibility with the existing housing
  • manufacturability for future batch production

After the first dimensional review, one important difference was identified.

The inlet inner diameter of the received reference configuration was approximately 16 mm, while the initial expectation had been approximately 22 mm.

Instead of requiring the customer to modify the complete filtration system, the filter and mating configuration were reviewed again and adjusted around the actual 16 mm interface.

This type of dimensional correction is particularly important in customized OEM projects. Even when the filtration media performs correctly, a small difference in an interface dimension can make a cartridge unsuitable for installation.

Stainless Steel Construction for Waste Engine Oil

Stainless steel was selected as the primary construction material because the application required a durable filter capable of handling contaminated engine oil.

Compared with disposable polymer cartridges, a properly designed metal filter element provides several advantages for this type of application:

Mechanical strength
The stainless steel structure can better withstand pressure, oil viscosity and handling during repeated use.

Resistance to deformation
The filter maintains its geometry under operating conditions where less rigid materials may deform.

Cleanability and reusability
Depending on the contamination and cleaning procedure, metal elements can be cleaned and reused rather than discarded after every filtration cycle.

Customized geometry
Metal components can be machined and fabricated to match non-standard equipment interfaces more accurately.

For an equipment manufacturer, these characteristics are particularly valuable because the cartridge becomes part of the equipment design rather than simply a consumable installed in a standard housing.

Sample Testing Under Real Operating Conditions

After receiving the prototypes, the customer began a multi-stage evaluation.

The initial feedback on the samples was positive, particularly regarding the overall workmanship and construction quality.

However, visual inspection and dimensional fit were only the first steps.

The customer continued with actual oil testing to evaluate how the cartridge performed with contaminated fluid. The final stage focused specifically on debris testing—checking the cartridge's ability to capture and handle solid contamination present in used engine oil.

This step was important because the real performance of an oil filter cannot be confirmed simply by measuring dimensions or checking whether the cartridge fits the housing.

It must demonstrate that it can retain the expected debris while maintaining acceptable oil flow and structural integrity.

The customer subsequently advised that testing was nearing completion and that the results were looking good, subject to completion of the final debris evaluation.

Preparing for Batch Production

As testing progressed, the discussion moved from prototype development toward production quantities.

The customer requested pricing and lead-time information for:

  • 200 pieces
  • 500 pieces
  • 1,000 pieces

This required Pullner to consider not only filtration performance but also how the customized design could be produced economically at different volumes.

An alternative 6061 aluminum end component was also discussed as a possible method of reducing cost.

After manufacturing evaluation, however, the aluminum option required additional processing and did not provide a clear cost advantage compared with the existing stainless steel solution.

The stainless steel design was therefore recommended for production because it provided a better balance of manufacturing efficiency, durability and lead time.

From a Physical Sample to a Production-Ready Filter

This project demonstrates a typical challenge for equipment manufacturers requiring non-standard filtration components.

The solution cannot be selected simply by searching for a cartridge with a similar diameter and micron rating.

The supplier must understand how the filter fits into the equipment, how the fluid behaves, what contaminants must be removed, and whether the design can eventually be manufactured consistently in commercial quantities.

For this waste engine oil application, Pullner's development process covered:

Original sample analysis → dimensional confirmation → customized stainless steel design → prototype manufacturing → fit verification → oil testing → debris testing → production cost evaluation

The result is a customized stainless steel filtration solution developed around the customer's equipment rather than forcing the equipment to adapt to a standard cartridge.

For OEMs and equipment manufacturers with specialized oil, fuel, hydraulic or industrial fluid filtration requirements, this development approach can provide a practical route from an existing sample or concept to a production-ready filter element.
